These days, we’ve probably all gotten very good at practicing social distancing. Many of us are still working from home, spending more of our free time at home, doing at-home learning, and generally not going out in public any more than is absolutely necessary. Your Overland Park dentist would like to remind you that just because your usual daily routines have changed quite a bit, your oral care habits shouldn’t change – unless it’s for the better!
Maintain your oral care routine. The basics of your oral care routine are simple: Brush twice a day for at least two minutes each time and floss at least once per day. No matter how your other routines may change, maintaining this one is vital to your continued oral health.
Up your flossing game. After brushing, flossing is the most important thing you can do for your overall oral health. Flossing gets to plaque that your toothbrush can’t. It’s that simple. Practice your flossing technique or check out some YouTube videos or blog posts on how to floss like a boss.
Eat healthy, be healthy. That goes for more than just your oral health, too. When you’re working from home, it’s easy to snack throughout the day or fall into a junk food rut. Taking time for meal planning can be something that you and your loved ones do together as a family, and it’s important to staying healthy. Being active can also be tricky when you’re stuck at home, but it’s extremely important for your overall health and your mood.
Drink responsibly. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. It’s important for your overall health, and it also helps to keep your teeth and gums healthy. Staying hydrated helps to prevent dry mouth, which can lead to tooth decay and gum disease. Drinking plenty of water is one of your first lines of defense for your mouth, and it’s vital to keeping your whole body healthy, too.
Replace your toothbrush. This list wouldn’t be complete if we didn’t mention having the right tools for the job. Whether you use a regular toothbrush or an electric toothbrush, you should replace the brush or the head every three months, and you should always replace your toothbrush or brush head if you’ve been sick! While you’re at it, order some new floss and mouthwash.
