Don’t Fall out of Good Habits this Year | Overland Park Family Dentist

Winter is definitely here in Overland Park. While this can be a beautiful time of year in the Midwest, it can also be challenging for our health. Cold weather often prevents us from being active outdoors, and shorter days can trigger seasonal affective disorder in many. This winter, especially, many of us are probably doing things a little differently, including spending more time working and learning from home. This makes it all the more important that we stick to our already established dental care routines and other good, healthy habits as we head into a new year.

Why do we fall out of healthy habits, whether they’re long-established or new resolutions that we’ve only just begun? It’s often because new conflicts arise without warning that may knock us off the proverbial wagon. Something as simple as a change in your daily work or school routine (something that almost all of us have experienced this winter) can have a huge impact on established patterns and habits.

These things happen to everyone, and there’s no need to beat yourself up if you lose track of healthy habits. The important thing is to get back on the horse and course correct when something comes up that knocks you out of your usual routine. Fortunately, these three pieces of advice from your Overland Park dentist will help you stay on track (or get back on track) with everything from your dental care routine to your exercise plan and beyond:

1. Acknowledge and reaffirm why you have healthy habits in the first place. Look, it can be all too easy to forget why we’re doing something and just feel that we have to do it. But we developed these habits – whether they’re brushing and flossing every day, working out meal prep, meditating, getting away from the computer to take a walk, catching up with friends and family, or whatever – for a reason. They help us feel better, live healthier, and improve our quality of life.

2. Set a schedule – and stick to it. Habits are easier to keep when you do them at the same time or the same way every day. Whatever habit you’re trying to stick to, put it on the calendar, set alerts on your phone or smartwatch, or do whatever helps you remember. This will help you stay on track and make the commitment feel more “real.”

3. Optimize your environment for success. Having the right space to practice self-care may be even more important than setting aside the right time. If you’re trying to practice mindfulness or meditation, leave your phone or laptop in another room. If you’re keeping up with healthy eating habits, keep healthy snacks close to hand. If you’re trying to stick to your oral care routine, make sure that you buy a new toothbrush (or a new head for your electric toothbrush) every three months and schedule regular visits to see your Overland Park dentist. Making good habits accessible and easy to do will help you stick with them and avoid falling out of healthy routines.

Here at Watts Family Dental, we hope that you’ll maintain your good oral care habits into the new year and every year – and we’re here to help! Just give us a call at (913) 338-3384 to schedule an appointment with your Overland Park dentist or ask us any questions you might have!
