CEREC One-appointment Crowns at Watts Family Dental in Overland Park

If you’ve ever had a porcelain crown made for one of your teeth, you may already know that they are nearly indistinguishable from natural teeth in both appearance and function. As a cosmetic or restorative dental appliance, porcelain crowns are a great option for teeth that have suffered from chips, cracks, or decay and cannot be restored with traditional fillings. Porcelain crowns are often used to seal and protect a tooth after a root canal – covering the entire surface of the tooth and restoring it to the original shape and size. In some cases, porcelain crowns are even applied to solve problems with tooth discoloration.

What makes a porcelain crown a benefit to patients is the fact that they are both incredibly durable and aesthetically pleasing at the same time. Porcelain crowns can be custom crafted to meet the needs of almost any dental restoration situation – even matched in color to the surrounding teeth and adjusted for bite accuracy. The only problem with porcelain crowns that patients have faced in the past is the time it takes to have a custom porcelain crown designed, crafted at a dental laboratory, and sent back to the office for fitting. Before recent changes in technology shortened the process, the porcelain crown procedure took two (sometimes three) visits to the dentist and a waiting period of a few weeks (or months) in which the patient would have to live with a temporary crown that sometimes cracked or fell out – necessitating an additional visit to the office. Fortunately, there is a new technology called CEREC available from Sirona Dental Systems in North Carolina that allows dentists to custom craft porcelain crowns and fit them in a single appointment at the office. Here at Watts Family Dental, we’re proud to say that we’ve applied this technology in our office and we couldn’t be happier to see how this benefits our patients.

CEREC, which is an acronym for “Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics,” is a cutting-edge porcelain crown development technology that eliminates goopy impression material (molds) and, instead, makes use of a small 3D imaging wand that captures a digital representation of the tooth. The resulting digital information can be fed to a CEREC milling machine that can make a perfect porcelain crown in a matter of minutes. As the CEREC digital representation is so precise, the resulting porcelain crowns that come out of the milling process fit the tooth and surrounding teeth in every dimension. After the CEREC porcelain crown is double-checked for fit and bite accuracy, it can be colored to match the surrounding teeth and cemented in place. No temporary crowns. No second appointment.

The CEREC porcelain crown technology is nothing short of amazing. It has even been featured and demonstrated on the television show The Drs. We’re proud to have CEREC as part of our technology base here at Watts Family Dental in Overland Park.
