The holiday season is upon us, and if you already have a handle on all your shopping, wrapping, decorating, card writing, and menu planning, we just want to say, “Well done!” If, on the other hand, you’re like us, and you still have miles to go before it all comes together, take heart in knowing it’ll all work out, and it’ll all be worth it when the presents are under the tree and the stockings are hung by the chimney with care. In either case, here’s a bit of advice from your Overland Park dentist on how to survive the holiday season and come out the other side with better oral health than ever before!

Focus on Family Events, Not Food. For so many of us, the holiday season is associated inextricably with yummy foods and sweets. Even though a little bit of candy or dessert isn’t all that harmful, it’s a better idea to focus on holiday events and activities that the family can do together, year after year. That way, everyone’s fond memories will be of what they did, not what they ate.

Splurge on a Good Electric Toothbrush. Sure, the kids might not want to get a toothbrush for Christmas, but a really good Oral-B, Philips Sonicare, Pro-Sys, Waterpik, Quip, or Goby electric toothbrush would make a great gift for just about anyone in the family. Just make sure you also get the kids something from their list.

Replace Candy Gifts with Holiday Storybooks. Sure, candies are small, so they fit into stockings easily, but there are lots more memorable gifts that you could choose. Find a series of age-appropriate, holiday-themed books – even activity books, magazines, or comics – and stuff the stockings with them instead. It’ll be something the kids look forward to each holiday season!

Get into the Veggies. Broccoli, celery, and carrots all make great snacks for the holiday season. You can set them out with a little fat-free dip and you’ve got a party! Plus, they actually help clean your teeth as you chew!

Try Out New Fruits. Fruits have a lot of natural sugar in them, so enjoy them in moderation and be sure you brush after. The holiday season is a perfect time to try out new foods on the family, since everyone is in the mood for fun new treats, and there are plenty of options for dried fruits that can be enjoyed in snackable portions! Try something new!

Carol While You Brush. You should brush your teeth for at least two minutes each time you brush. Not sure how long that is? Try humming a few verses of one of your favorite holiday songs while you brush. It helps pass the time and can act as a stopwatch. Get the kids involved and make it a group effort!

Stay Hydrated. Just like with foods, there are lots of yummy beverages around during the holidays. Many of them can dry out your mouth and stain your teeth, so be sure to enjoy them in moderation, and always drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
